Benefit-oriented Consulting
At first sight, benefit-oriented consulting does not appear to differ a lot from the alternative, problem-oriented consulting. Both kinds of consulting processes will typically be initiated for the same kind of reason, namely to solve some kind of problem. For example, the problem for which the consultant is asked to find a solution could be to reduce the costs of a company's IT infrastructure, or to improve its quality in some area where it is felt to be lacking. The difference is that problem-oriented consulting remains focused on this initial problem description, and on finding a solution which appears to be desirable from a short-term perspective.
By contrast, benefit-oriented consulting takes a more long-term perspective and examines, beyond the immediate problem, the possible long-term benefits of the various possible solution strategies for the problem. Among the possible benefits which go beyond solving the immediate needs, a conscious choice should be made to select objectives and guiding principles which are truly worthwhile. The results must of course include a solution that meets the short-term needs, but in addition there will be an assurance that the choice which has been made is right also in the long run.
